Traditional architecture is one of the central themes in studies of Mediterranean culture. Its description frequently gives a readable sense of identity that goes beyond the regional differences to be found in a variety of geographical subsets. This sense of identity is classified by some authors within the framework of the biophysical and climatic conditions typical of Mediterranean regions. Others include it within the complex system of influences that differentiate historical periods from antiquity to contemporary society. Overall, the study of the organisation of Mediterranean homes is significant within different disciplinary spheres, from geography to ethnology and anthropology, from archaeology to history and art history, from sociology to architecture. A variety of approaches has therefore benefitted this study, and often a set of dichotomies have framed it (continuity/discontinuity; contamination/isolation; territory/culture; diachrony/diatopia).
The aim of the present conference is to contribute to this interdisciplinary debate by focusing particularly on the Western Mediterranean regions and by integrating recently developed research on built heritage in various regional subdivisions. We will focus on the characterisation of vernacular architecture (organisation of domestic space, integration within the rural and urban landscape, transformation throughout history) as well as discussions on proposed models, bearing in mind integrated conservation. We encourage contributions from all research specialists, inviting you to give papers and submit written articles on these topics.
The organisation of the present conference is part of the project “Traditional architecture in Mértola’s Old Town and its Territory: Built Heritage and Cultural Tourism” developed by Mértola’s Archaeological Site / Research Centre in Archaeology, Arts and Cultural Heritage in collaboration with the University of the Algarve, Mértola Local Authority and the Serrão Martins Foundation.
