International Congress on Medieval Pottery in the Mediterranean - Silves and Mértola

The 10th edition of the International Congress on Medieval Pottery in the Mediterranean will be held in Silves from 22nd October to 27th October 2012, organized in partnership by Silves Local Authority, the International Association for the Study of Medieval Ceramics in the Mediterranean, Mértola's Archaeological Field and the Archaeological Studies Centre from the Universities of Coimbra and Porto.

On 24th October there will be a visit to Mértola, followed by a session on “the Mediterranean and the Atlantic”, at the Marques Duque Theatre.

At this conference several national and international experts will look into six main subjects: ceramics in context, ceramics and power, the Mediterranean and the Atlantic, evolution and transfer of techniques, ceramics and commerce, and ceramics and the Discoveries. Additionally, about a hundred posters will be on display, relating to some of the conference presentations.

One of the sessions, focused on the Mediterranean and the Atlantic, will take place in Mértola, at the Marques Duque Theatre. The conference will end with a field trip to various locations in the Algarve, namely the Old Castle of Alcoutim and its museum, the Islamic Centre of Tavira, the Archaeological Museum of Faro, the Municipal Museum of Faro and the Islamic walls of the city, the Municipal Museum of Archaeology in Albufeira and the Municipal Museum of Portimão.

At the same time some activities will take place, like the presentation of the proceedings from the IX CICM2, the workshop of 3D scanning and digital publishing of ceramics, the sale of Archaeology books, the exhibition “Signs of Everyday Life” and several field trips.

It should be noted that the 10th International Congress on Medieval Pottery in the Mediterranean has the support of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, the Foundation for Science and Technology and the Local Authority of Mértola.
