Inauguration of the FCT Historical Archive and creation of the José Mattoso scholarships

On the 19th of December, the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) opened to the public its historical archive, which has about 3.5 km of documents with information about science in Portugal. The archive consists of more than 40.000 folders with documentation from 1967 onwards, a date marking the establishment of the National Board of Scientific and Technological Research (JNICT), predecessor to the FCT. The project’s coordination was entitled to the Institute of Contemporary History of the New University of Lisbon (IHC / FCSH-UNL) in partnership with the Institute of National Archives and the Mário Soares Foundation. The inauguration was attended by the Minister of Education and Science, Nuno Crato; the former Minister of Science, Technology and Higher Education, José Mariano Gago; and the historian José Mattoso.

During the ceremony it was announced the creation of the José Mattoso Scholarships, one for a Master’s degree and another for doctoral studies, which aim to encourage historical research on the development of science in Portugal. According to the above mentioned historian, "there shouldn’t be a gap between past, present and future, and the archive is that which provides the function for this accumulation of knowledge and the possibility of true development."
